2024: A Look Ahead for Citizens Policyholders
Keep Celebrations Festive – Avoid Holiday Hazards

The holiday season brings joy, warmth and the spirit of giving. However, it also comes with increased fire hazards that can quickly turn festive celebrations into disasters.

To ensure your holidays are both merry and safe, here are some essential holiday fire safety tips:

  • Mind the candles: Keep candles in sturdy holders, away from flammable materials like curtains, and never leave them unattended. Consider using flameless LED candles as a safer alternative.
  • Check your lights: Inspect holiday lights for frayed wires, broken bulbs or damaged sockets. Replace any damaged lights promptly. Opt for LED lights, which emit less heat and are more energy-efficient.
  • Properly decorate your tree: If you have a live Christmas tree, water it regularly. Keep it away from heat sources such as radiators and fireplaces. If you choose an artificial tree, make sure it is labeled as fire-resistant.
  • Don’t overload outlets: Use surge protectors to help prevent electrical fires, and unplug lights and decorations before going to bed or leaving the house.
  • Cook with care: Never leave cooking unattended, especially when using stovetops or deep fryers. Keep flammable items, like towels and oven mitts, away from hot surfaces.
  • Have a fire escape plan: Make sure everyone in your household knows the escape plan in case of a fire. Practice it regularly and have a meeting point outside the house. Ensure your smoke detectors are working and replace their batteries if needed.
  • Be cautious with decorations: Avoid hanging decorations near heat sources or open flames. Choose fire-resistant or noncombustible decorations when possible.
  • Keep fire extinguishers handy: Have fire extinguishers readily available in key areas of your home, especially in the kitchen. Learn how to use them properly and ensure they are in good working condition.
  • Store firewood safely: If you use a fireplace or wood-burning stove, store firewood away from the house and keep it covered. Use a fireplace screen to prevent sparks from escaping.
  • Dispose of wrapping paper safely: After opening gifts, avoid throwing wrapping paper directly into the fireplace. Dispose of it properly in a trash bag.

Remember that prevention is the best way to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday season. By following these holiday fire safety tips, you can protect your loved ones and property while creating cherished memories.
