Be Safe. Save Money.

Mitigation matters! When you take steps to protect your property from damage caused by storms, fire, theft and other perils, you may also save money on your property insurance.

Citizens offers several discounts for homes and businesses that have features installed to help protect them from severe storms and other perils (mitigation features). Under state law, documentation is required before any discounts can be applied. Please see the Wind Mitigation Feature Documentation Guidelines for more information and ask your agent whether you might qualify.

Wind Mitigation Discounts

Wind mitigation discounts are available for homes and businesses with documented wind-damage mitigation features, protecting against wind and rain damage present in hurricanes and other severe weather events. To be eligible for these discounts, wind mitigation features must be documented through a wind mitigation inspection.

These discounts:

  • Apply only to the wind portion of your policy premium
  • Are not offered for mobile homes

Wind mitigation discounts are offered for:

  • Opening protection devices. Examples include:
    • Shutters to protect windows and doors from windborne debris
    • Special impact-resistant windows and doors
    • Dade and Broward counties only: Properties that are four or more stories and built in 2002 or later are eligible for the Opening Protection Discount when a certain type of shutter is installed.
  • Roof shape
    • Hip roof (sloped on all four sides like a pyramid)

Speak with your agent to see if you qualify or what you need to do to qualify.

Florida Building Code (FBC) Compliance Discount

Available for homes built on or after January 1, 2002.

Homes built before 2002 that have had roofs updated to meet the 2001 Florida Building Code are eligible for the minimum FBC 2001 credit. Speak with your agent to see if you qualify.

Homes built on or after January 1, 2012, are eligible for the minimum FBC 2012 credit. This applies to Citizens Homeowners 3 – Special Form (HO-3) and Citizens Homeowners 8 – Modified Coverage Form (HO-8) policies only, including wind-only. Speak with your agent to see if you qualify.

The discount does not apply to dwelling, rental, mobile home and condo policies.

Opening Protection Discount for Dade and Broward Counties Only

Properties that are four or more stories built in 2002 or later are eligible for Opening Class A credit. Speak with your agent to see if you qualify.

Roof Construction Discounts

If your building qualifies for the FBC Compliance discount, you already receive discounts for roof construction. If not, you may be eligible for roof construction discounts, depending on how your roof is constructed. A roof or wind mitigation inspection may be required to qualify for these discounts. Speak to your agent to see if you qualify or what you need to do to qualify.
